Windows 7 End of Support - What does this mean for me?

What does Windows 7 End of Support mean to me?

After January 14, 2020, you can keep running Windows 7, but it will no longer receive critical security updates. Therefore, it’s important that you upgrade to a modern operating system such as Windows 10 Pro, which can provide the latest security updates to help keep you and your data safer. In addition, Microsoft customer service will no longer be available to provide Windows 7 technical support.

I’m currently running Windows 7. What should I do?

Most Windows 7 users will benefit from making the shift to a new Windows 10 Pro device powered by 8th Gen Intel® Core™ vPro™ processors. Today's PCs are faster, lightweight, yet powerful and more secure, with a price that's considerably less than that of the average PC eight years ago. Modern PCs also cost 3x less than the cost of maintaining old devices.2 Our guide can help you choose a new PC in just a few easy steps.

Will I be able to use my Windows 7 apps on Windows 10 Pro devices?

You can keep working in a familiar environment. All of your Windows-based and specialized apps should run on Windows 10 Pro.  With Windows 10 Pro, you can also run Microsoft Store apps, web apps, and virtualized Windows apps. Microsoft offers the most support for specialized line of business applications.

Will Internet Explorer still be supported on Windows 7?

Support for Internet Explorer on a Windows 7 device will also be discontinued on January 14, 2020. As a component of Windows, Internet Explorer follows the support lifecycle of the Windows operating system it’s installed on.

Will Windows 10 Pro devices be easy to implement and manage?

Windows 10 Pro devices are user friendly and flexibly managed with minimal IT involvement required. Because they’re working in a familiar environment, users require little additional training. Windows works with the technology you already own, and users can set up devices themselves without help from IT. IT retains control and compliance through the cloud with Windows Autopilot. You can also receive updates on your own schedule, for the supported lifetime of the device. New Intel® Core™ vPro™ processor-based devices provide a future-forward foundation for supporting the regular cadence of Windows 10 updates.

Can Windows 7 still be activated after January 14, 2020?

Windows 7 can still be installed and activated after end of support; however, it will be more vulnerable to security risks and viruses due to the lack of security updates. After January 14, 2020, Microsoft strongly recommends that you use Windows 10 instead of Windows 7 to ensure you’re on our most secure platform.

Can I upgrade my existing PC to Windows 10 Pro?

If your PC is more than 4 years old, we recommend switching to new devices to take advantage of the latest hardware capabilities. As an alternative, compatible Windows 7 PCs can be upgraded by purchasing and installing a full version of the software.
